Dakar Rally 2027 in Morocco | Route, 4×4 Rental & Desert Adventure
Experience Morocco’s spectacular landscapes as the world’s most famous rally-raid returns to Africa.
The Dakar Rally 2027 in Morocco promises an exciting experience for motorsport fans and travellers. After two decades away from Africa, the rally will return to the continent. Its route will cross Portugal and Morocco, taking competitors through dramatic deserts, remote regions and challenging terrain before reaching Marrakech.
For visitors, this event offers more than motorsport. It also creates an excellent opportunity to discover Morocco and enjoy an unforgettable holiday.
Dakar Rally 2027: Dates and Route Overview
According to the organisers’ announcement on 30 October 2026, the 49th edition will run from 9–23 January 2027. The FIA World Motor Sport Council must still approve the programme.
The rally will begin in Portugal. The prologue and opening stage will take place around Loulé and Faro. Competitors will then enter Morocco on 11 January.
Morocco will host 11 stages and a rest day in Agadir. The announced route includes Bouarfa, Zagora, Agadir and Smara. It also features sections near Dakhla. The rally will finish in Marrakech on 23 January.
These destinations highlight the scale and variety of the Moroccan stages. However, spectators should not assume that every road or track allows public access.
The announced route covers approximately 7,824 kilometres, including around 4,341 kilometres of special stages.
Organisers may change stage schedules, spectator locations and access arrangements. Therefore, check the official Dakar Rally website before travelling. Always follow instructions from event organisers and local authorities.
Why Morocco Is a Spectacular Setting for the Dakar Rally
Morocco offers an incredible variety of landscapes for rally-raid adventures. Visitors can discover vast deserts, rocky plateaus, mountain roads and remote villages.
Beautiful valleys and changing scenery also make the Moroccan stages special. Zagora and the surrounding Sahara regions reveal another side of Morocco, with peaceful landscapes far from busy city centres.
Agadir provides a beautiful coastal setting. Organisers also plan to hold the rally’s rest day there.
Marrakech offers a completely different experience. Its historic architecture, traditional markets and lively squares attract visitors throughout the year. The city also provides easy access to the High Atlas Mountains and southern Morocco.
Remember that the Dakar is a competitive sporting event, not a public road trip. Organisers may restrict access to special stages and remote areas.
Always use official spectator points and permitted roads. Never enter a race course or follow competitors onto closed tracks. Keep a safe distance from rally vehicles throughout the event.
Renting a 4×4 Vehicle to Follow the Dakar Rally
Would you like to travel independently between permitted spectator areas? Renting a 4×4 vehicle in Morocco can make your journey more comfortable.
Sahara Family Tours can help you enquire about 4×4 rental options during the Dakar Rally. Availability depends on your travel dates, preferred locations and rental requirements.
A suitable 4×4 can make longer journeys more comfortable. It can also help you reach approved access roads. However, a 4×4 does not give you permission to enter restricted areas or drive along the rally route.
Before booking, consider the number of passengers and your luggage requirements. Also, decide how long you need the vehicle.
You can enquire about self-drive rentals or a vehicle with a professional driver. The latter option depends on availability.
Ask the rental provider about these important conditions:
- Insurance coverage and excess or deposit.
- Mileage limits and fuel policy.
- Breakdown assistance and emergency support.
- Restrictions on unpaved roads and off-road driving.
- Additional driver requirements.
- Pick-up and return locations.
Make sure every driver appears on the rental agreement. Each driver must also carry the required documents.
Pay particular attention to driving restrictions. Some rental agreements prohibit dune driving, off-road activities or certain unpaved roads.
Never assume that a 4×4 can travel everywhere. Respect road closures, police instructions and official rally signage. Allow extra travel time because event traffic may cause delays.

Helpful Tips for Visitors and Spectators
Plan your accommodation around the stages or official spectator areas you want to visit. Avoid trying to cover the entire route in one day.
Driving distances in Morocco can take longer than expected. Mountain roads, traffic and temporary restrictions may affect your journey.
Download offline maps before leaving your hotel. Keep your phone charged and share your travel plans with someone.
If you are unfamiliar with Moroccan roads, consider hiring a professional driver. This option can make your journey easier and more relaxing.
Always respect local communities and private property. Protect the natural environment and follow all official safety instructions. Leave race operations to authorised teams.
Plan Your Morocco Trip for January 2027
January offers excellent opportunities to explore Morocco. However, temperatures vary considerably between regions. Desert evenings can become very cold, and mountain destinations may also experience winter weather.
Pack warm layers, comfortable footwear and sun protection. Check local weather forecasts before starting your journey.
Book your accommodation and transport early if you plan to attend the rally. Build flexibility into your itinerary, especially on stage days.
Confirm the official route and public access information before travelling. Keep water and essential supplies in your vehicle. Avoid driving long distances when tired.
